COLLECTIONS: FINE ARTS

ABOUT THE CURATOR

Lee Stevens, Senior Curator

AT THE MUSEUM
As curator, my greatest responsibility is to the physical and intellectual preservation of the collection for generations to come by employing professional museum standards of display techniques, storage, transport, conservation, cataloguing, and inventory. Collecting, preserving and documenting allow for interpreting and exhibiting. I attempt to share the visual arts through exhibitions of both historic and contemporary art such as the Contemporary Artists Series. Additionally, sharing occurs through loans to other institutions, and providing images and information to scholars, the general public, and the media. Recent loans were made to: the Chicago Art Institute, Brandywine River Museum, Reading Art Museum, other PHMC sites, and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Each year images of Collection objects appear in dozens of text and history books, TV films, and other publications.

Interwoven are other duties including but not limited to: exhibition planning and installing; planning for new storage and galleries; collection data base management; Governor’s Residence art exhibits; reviewing offers of gifts of art; updating the Archives of Pennsylvania Art; and daily requests from institutions, scholars and the general public for information on art, artists, and exhibitions. Increasing the awareness of the collection through: maintenance of 2000+ mailing list of art galleries, schools, and organizations; updating Internet art resources about the Art Collection such as the Smithsonian Inventory of American Painting and Sculpture and ASKart.com.
