American History in Pennsylvania:
Great Documents, Great Events, Great Places

Professional Development Institutes
for Social Studies Teachers, Grades 7-12

The Central Susquehanna Intermediate Unit in partnership with The State Museum of Pennsylvania and the Pennsylvania State Archives will be presenting teacher institutes in 2006, 2007 and 2008 with funding from a Teaching American History grant from the U.S. Department of Education.

2006 – American Revolution and Constitution

  • Lectures by Dr. Fred Anderson and Dr. Bill Pencak
  • Lectures by Museum and Archives staff
  • Sessions on using shared inquiry to explore documents and objects
  • Two two-day field trips to Philadelphia and Washington, DC

2007 – The Civil War

  • Lectures by Dr. Carol Reardon and Dr. Judith Giesburg
  • Lectures by Museum and Archives staff
  • Sessions on using shared inquiry to explore documents and objects
  • 3 day field trip to Gettysburg and Washington, DC

2008 – The Industrial Nation

  • Lectures by Dr. Tom Dublin and Dr. Walter Licht
  • Lectures by Museum and Archives staff
  • Sessions on using shared inquiry to explore documents and objects
  • Field trips to Bethlehem/Anthracite Region and Washington, DC

We will be recruiting during January each year through the following partner IUs: Tuscarora, Lincoln, Lancaster-Lebanon, Capital Area, BLaST, Luzerne, Schuylkill and Central Susquehanna.
