Levitt was one of the first large-scale builders
to recognize the importance of television. While some recommended
placing TV sets in the basement or a separate family room,
Levitt accepted the TV as an inevitable fixture of modern
life and eventually eliminated the fireplace to make room
for it.

The impact of television on family life was particularly
