VISIT: INFORMATION

The State Museum of Pennsylvania, founded in 1905, serves as the official museum of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The Museum is administered by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission and is one of 26 sites on the Pennsylvania Trail of History. The Museum has been housed in its current location at Third and North Streets since 1965.

The museum’s collections and program areas include Archaeology, Community and Domestic Life, Fine Arts, Industry & Technology, Military & Political History, Paleontology and Geology, Popular Culture and Zoology/Botany.

DIRECTIONS:

HOURS OF OPERATION:
The State Museum of Pennsylvania is open Monday through Saturday 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Sunday 12:00 noon to 5:00 p.m. Holiday hours subject to change.

ADMISSION:
General admission to the museum is FREE until July 1, 2009. Click here for more information.

ACCESSIBILITY:
The State Museum is handicapped-accessible. A barrier free entrance is located at the Forster Street entrance. Individuals with disabilities or those in need of special assistance are asked to call (717) 787-6778 or the Pennsylvania TDD relay service at (800) 654-5984 in advance of their visit.

BACKPACKS:
The State Museum prohibits backpacks, large bags, personal radio/tape players and electronic games in the galleries. The State Museum reserves the right to inspect any items entering the premises.

COAT ROOM/LOCKERS:

The State Museum provides a coatroom and lockers on the Ground Floor to store personal belongings. The State Museum is not responsible for lost or stolen personal property.

ESCALATORS:
Escalators connect all public floors, from the Ground Floor to the Third Floor.

ELEVATOR:
An elevator is available for visitors who choose not to use escalators.

FOOD SERVICE/SNACK BAR:
A snack bar with vending machines and seating is available on the Ground Floor. (Note: Food and beverages are NOT PERMITTED in any of the galleries.)

TEMPERATURE:
Galleries are maintained at 68° degrees F in order to protect artifacts. Please dress accordingly.
